Installing the Tripo Blender plugin

The official extension is Tripo 3D for Blender, published by VAST AI Research under the MIT licence. Install it like any other add-on:

The three generation modes

  • Text-to-model — a prompt in, a mesh out. Best for props and blockouts where you just need mass and silhouette fast.
  • Image-to-model — a single reference image becomes a 3D object. This is the mode that has driven most of the recent growth in image-to-3D searches, and the one where results are most predictable, because the model isn't inventing a shape from scratch.
  • Multiview-to-model — several photographs of the same object from different angles, which resolves the guesswork on the sides the camera never saw.

Exports cover GLB, FBX and OBJ, so anything you generate for a Blender scene also drops cleanly into Unity or Unreal.

What to do after the model imports

Generated meshes are production-adjacent, not production-ready. The usual cleanup pass, in the order that saves the most time:

  1. 01Check scale and origin — imported generations rarely match your scene's unit setup. Set the origin to geometry and scale against a reference cube before anything else.
  2. 02Inspect topology in wireframe. Generated meshes are dense and unstructured; if the asset will deform or be edited by hand, retopologise rather than fight it.
  3. 03Check the UVs and baked textures before you start re-lighting — the material that ships with the import is often doing more work than the geometry.
  4. 04Decimate for background props. A hero asset deserves retopology; a rock forty metres away does not.

Where it struggles

  • Precise, countable detail — “twelve steps”, “two rows of chess pieces” — is not what image-conditioned generators are good at. Procedural, code-driven tools handle instruction-following of that kind far better, which is why the benchmark includes prompts that test exactly this.
  • Hard-surface objects with crisp mechanical edges tend to come back softened.
  • Generation is remote and credit-metered, so iteration has a per-attempt cost that a local procedural tool doesn't.
